Whether you're a total newbie or a candle-making pro looking to experiment, this step-by-step guide is simple, fun, and perfect for anyone who wants to create a cozy atmosphere at home.
And just a quick note—this isn’t my exact recipe (a little mystery is good, right?), but it’s a great starting point! I always include a generous splash of essential oils in my candles because, let’s be real, nobody has time for the headaches or migraines that overly synthetic candles can bring.
Bonus: If DIY isn’t your thing, you can always check out my shop where I’ve already done all the hard work for you! My candles are lovingly handcrafted with essential oils to give you a beautifully natural scent that won’t overwhelm. 🌿
What You’ll Need:
- Soy Wax: 7.36oz for one 8oz candle.
- Fragrance Oil: 8% fragrance load (0.64oz total).
- Essential Oils: Use 10% of that fragrance load—so, 0.064oz essential oils.
- Wick: Make sure it’s the right size for your container.
- Container: A sturdy, heat-resistant 8oz jar works best.
- Double Boiler: Melts your wax nice and evenly.
- Thermometer: Helps you get the temps just right.
- Scale: Accuracy is key, folks.
- Mixing Stick: A fancy spoon works too.
- Wick Stickers: To keep your wick in place.
Step-by-Step Candle Magic:
-
Set Up Your Space:
Clean up your workspace, grab all your supplies, and secure your wick in the center of your container with a wick sticker or glue dot. -
Melt That Wax:
Use a double boiler to gently melt 7.36oz of soy wax. Keep an eye on the temperature—it should reach about 185°F. -
Mix Your Scents:
Combine your essential oils (10% of your fragrance mix) with your synthetic fragrance oil. For example, if you’re using 0.64oz of fragrance oil, 0.064oz of that will be essential oils. Stir it all up like the magical potion it is! -
Blend Fragrance with Wax:
Once your wax cools slightly to around 175°F, stir in your fragrance blend for 2-3 minutes to make sure it’s evenly distributed. -
Pouring Time:
Let your wax cool down to about 135°F (trust me, this makes all the difference for a smooth surface). Then, carefully pour it into your container. Keep your wick straight with a wick holder or some chopsticks. -
Let It Set:
Give your candle 24-48 hours to cure before lighting—it’s tempting, but the wait is worth it, promise! For the best results, remember that soy wax takes up to two weeks to fully cure, which enhances the scent throw and ensures your candle burns beautifully. Patience pays off with a cleaner, longer-lasting burn! -
Trim the Wick:
Snip your wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting to keep the flame steady and clean.
Why Use Essential Oils?
Essential oils are a total game-changer in candle making. Not only do they smell divine, but they’re also great for reducing headaches and overpowering, artificial scents. Plus, they make your candles feel a little more special—like a mini spa session in a jar.
Hot Throw vs. Cold Throw:
- Cold Throw: When your candle smells amazing even when it’s unlit. Soy wax holds essential oils beautifully, so your candle gives off a subtle, natural scent.
- Hot Throw: When you light it up and your whole room smells like a dream. Essential oils shine here, but since they’re natural, controlling your wax temps is key to keeping their magic alive.
